The Avenue FAQ
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the aim of The Avenue Programme?
The idea behind the programme is to help young people understand that material possessions, physical fitness, good looks or intellectual abilities are not what ultimately matter in life. What matters is character, because it enables us to take responsibility and become the best people we can be. Character remains with us even when other things fade away. That is why it is worth developing good habits, getting to know oneself and choosing to serve others.
2. What form do meetings in The Avenue Programme take?
The programme includes lectures, workshops and discussions or debates. In addition, each participant takes part in group tutoring or has one-to-one meetings with a tutor of her choice.
3. What is tutoring and what does it involve?
Tutoring is an innovative method of personalised education designed to develop participants’ potential and motivate them to pursue personal growth. It originates from the British educational tradition and was first introduced at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. At The Avenue, tutoring takes the form of regular meetings during which each participant can discuss important personal matters and life choices with someone who has extensive professional, family and social experience.
4. Isn't it too early for first- or second-year secondary school students to think about university or future careers?
Absolutely not. The programme is not intended to put pressure on young people to get into the “best” university or secure the “best” job as early as possible. It is, however, valuable to look ahead and reflect on what matters in life so that participants can begin developing the skills and attitudes needed to take on great challenges.
Through a variety of activities, individual and group meetings, career presentations and tutoring, young women will develop their character, build self-confidence and discover their place in:
- the community they are part of and help to shape;
- using their talents to build a future career;
- their vocation to marriage and motherhood;
- responsible citizenship.
Between the ages of 14 and 19, many habits are formed, friendships established, and ideas and values begin to take shape.
5. Can I enrol if I am unable to attend every session?
Yes, but we strongly encourage participants to take part in every session.
6. Should I tell my friends about The Avenue Programme?
Yes. We encourage you to tell your friends about The Avenue Programme. When friends take part together, they can support one another throughout the programme and beyond it. If you would like a short presentation for yourself and your friends, please get in touch.
